...but since they won't have me over at
The Smoking Section (What up Gotty!). Anyway since this is the only outlet I have you get my rant intead. I am a music snob. It is not my fault, my tastes are just better than yours. There are like 5 people on the planet who's musical taste I actually respect (Two fo them are Bastich and
Retro, whos blog you should peep more often). I am also a West coast born and raised 31 year old hip hop fan. The first tapes I remember getting were Run DMC "Raising Hell" (I actually performed You be Illin at a 4th grade Christmas talent show, so give me props), and The Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill". The first CD I bought was in eighth grade and it was Public Enemy "Fear of a Black Planet". I spent much of Junior High through young adulthood bumping plenty of "East Coast Hip Hop" but also N.W.A. (Don't sleep on Dre's production on EFIL4ZAGGIN), Richie Rich, Pac, Thug Life, Sir Mix, King T, The Liks, Mac Mall, C-Bo, Mac Dre, The Click, well you get the idea. So you can imagine how excited I was when I started hearing promos on Sirius' Backspin 43 for their "Salute to The Westside Memorial Weekend". I even read on their site...
"
From Seattle to the Bay Area, to South Central, all weekend Backspin is putting the spotlight on classic hip-hop tracks born on the West Coast. Listen each hour for an extra dose of tracks from the "west side""
So I am driving at work oday, digging the scene with a gangsta lean (word to William Devaughn). I start listening to Backspin and what do I hear?
- Black Sheep "This or That"
- Salt N Pepa "Shake Yo Thang"
- N.W.A "Appetite for Destruction"
- D-Nice "Call Me D-Nice" (This song was, is, and will always be money)
- Run DMC "Peter Piper"
- Biggie Smalls "The What"
- Kid Frost "Terminator" (Seriously, if it wasn't for low budget car shows he'd be homeless)
- Public Enemy "Rebel Without a Cause"
- Special Ed "I'm the Magnificent"
- Boogie Down Productions "Loves gonna Get'cha"
- Doug E Fresh "Keep Rising to the Top"
- Tupac "Keep ya Head Up"
- Gangstarr "Code of the Streets"
- LL Cool J "Momma Said Knock You Out" (Dudes been a joke since he was rockin' the bells"
- N.W.A. Dopeman (I don't give a shit if yo girl gets down and sucks my...)
- Redman "Press Rewind" (He does freak it in Korean)
- Big Daddy Kane "I'll tkae you there" (Lame Staple Singers sample)
- ATCQ "Can I Kick It?"
- Queen Latifah "Ladies First" (Garbage, Lyte was 10x the M.C.)
- Boogie Boys "Fly Girl"
- Public Enemy "Can't Truss It"
- L.O.N.S. "Another case of that PTA"
- Beastie Boys "Rhymin and Stealin"
- EPMD "Gold Digger"
- Tupac "Dear Mama"
- Chill Rob G "The Power" (I never even cosidered it hip hop)
- Sir Mix A Lot "Buttermilk Biscuits" (A legend around here, I got Mix A Lot stories for ya)
- Heavy D "Now that We Found Love"
- ATCQ "Bonita Applebum" (I remember I had no idea what Applebum was all about)
- Nice N Smooth "Old to the New" (Dwyck is MORE than enough really)
So anyway, anyone notice anything about this list? This represents a lot of music here, I mean I was a little freaked out so I actually wrote that down. Aside from Latifah, Chill Rob G, and maybe Nice N Smooth the playlist would get heavy rotation on the ipod, BUT you have to be fucking pulling my chain if this is West Coast anything? I mean two Pac songs, and two N.W.A. songs? Frost barely counts unless you are a vato, BUT I'll give them points for the Mix-A-Lot song, and a bonus for it being off the Swass album. I call bullshit, 6 west coast songs out of 30 on fucking "Salute to the Westside" weekend? Can I get some Low Profile, Mac Mall, or some Comptons Most Wanted? Christ, I need a damn drink...
