Some crazy-ass Chinese dude is growing pears shaped like Buddha. o_0

Discuss.

Hao Xianzhang, a local famer, spent six years to perfect the process by growing the pears inside moulds, local media reported. The pears cost around 50 yuan (7.32 USD) each.

The Original Man piece...

Posted: Monday, September 14, 2009
So a while back (about a year ago) i was approached by Nate, a guy ive done quite a bit of work for in the past. He had this idea for a new jewelry piece that he wanted made. He wanted the classic hip hop staple, the Jesus piece, but with his own twist on it. He wanted HIS jesus to be portrayed as a black man, not the typical white version. So i said "no problem" and got started sketching.

This was the first rough sketch, to show Nate what i was thinking. It ended up being pretty damn close to what he wanted. So we proceeded to finish up a tight, final, digital mockup.

This was the final artwork, that we sent to Ben Baller over at If&Co, in LA.

(IMAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED)

They got to work on the wax mold, and after a whole bunch of slight, subtle revisions, this was the final mold.

From there they go ahead and cast it in 14k white gold. This is the rough stage, directly after the casting.

From there, they polish it up, and start setting the stones. After 900 or so diamonds are set, this is what you end up with.

These are the final pics.

(The yellow jesus in this pic is the one made famous by Jacob the Jeweler. Its the most coveted and famous piece for hip hop heads that want a jesus piece. As you can see, ours is quite a bit bigger and much more detailed)

These are the final specs of the piece, taken from Bens Blog, where its also posted.

jewelry specs:
TOTAL WEIGHT IN GOLD: 200 GRAMS 14K
TOTAL DIAMOND WEIGHT: 20.9 CARATS OF ALL VS1 DIAMONDS (APPROX 900+ DIAMONDS)
HEIGHT OF PIECE: 4.5"

Also, this past weekend i was in Southern California for business, but decided to stay a couple of extra days to hang out with a couple of buddies (ill post about that later). So we went down to the Slauson, checked out the If&Co store and spoke with Steve a little bit. He pulled the piece out of the safe in the back, so i could see it in person.

So this is a candid pic my man Yong snapped when we were checking it out.

Yeah, so anyway, thats about it i think. This project started a long while ago, and its nice to see it through to completion. I mentioned how i was working on a big project way back then, but im sure most of you probably thought i was talking out my ass. Regardless, this was it. Now its done.

On to the next piece.

A little more work for IF&Co...

via my man Ben's blog. Go here to peep the usual nonsense and immaculate jewelry work he posts about.

Heres the original sketch i was provided. I was asked to "clean it up".

So after a few small changes to please the client, this is what i sent off. Let me reiterate btw, i didnt design this piece. Its exactly what the client wanted, so even though its not my cup of tea, everyone was happy in the end.

Final pics:

Specs via the blog:

thanks to warfare chris for cleaning up the artwork!
this piece is 2.5", 3" with the "IF" bail and weighs over 100 grams...
but peep game.... OVER 21 CARATS IN TOTAL DIAMOND WEIGHT!

Small project im working on...

http://www.theclinkroom.com/

The Clink Room is a blog that i follow. Its run by a couple of designers from Plan B branding. They do mostly sports franchise identities, which i find to be pretty interesting.

So anyway they decided to have a little contest.

Basically its an imaginary baseball league comprised of Taco shops/stands. The point of it is to come up with a concept for a team and then design a logo/hat. The winner gets his hat made BY NEW ERA and $250. Plus i think 10 of the hats. And every time they do another run of the hats (if theyre big sellers) you get another $250. So i figured it was worth takin a stab at it.

So i had a question about the PDF format of the template they provided, so i emailed them. As an afterthought i attached this ROUGH version of what i was working on. Figuring maybe theyd have a critique or something.

These jerks (just kidding guys, if you're reading this) posted it and made it sound like i was a degenerate who was unfortunately using CorelDraw. Then suggested some other designers who have the appropriate software, team up with me to do an entry.

At first i was insulted, on some "F the Clink Room!" steez, but then i realized its just another case of prejudice against Corel, or any other non-adobe design software out there. They assumed that since i didnt have Adobe Illustrator, i must be some kinda chump who was just taking a shot at it. Its a common misconception, in all reality (not about ME necessarily, im just sayin...), that if you dont use Adobe products, you must not be a real designer. Which is hardly the case in my humble opinion.

*End of Rant*

Anyway, i got a couple of ideas up my sleeve for another entry or two, so i feel like i need to really come correct and represent for all those lame Corel users out there. (kidding)

This blog has sucked lately...
