Spud Bowl 2012...

So my buddy is having a mashed potato eating contest at his pub, during halftime of the Super Bowl. So i made a flyer for him.

We came up with a mascot idea and i ran with it.

Here are the original sketches of Oliver. I basically fleshed out the Oliver Fitch logo and turned him into a drunk, football carrying potato.

Heres the final flyer. I went with a sort of vintage, fight poster look.

Im not completely happy with the mascot, but it was a rush job and i had to get it done so it could hang up for at least a week before the game.

I really like how the overall layout of the flyer looks though. I went with some rounded, bubbly typefaces that i usually avoid, to break out of my comfort zone. I like how it turned out though and its still definitely my style of typography.

My Kraken design won again in the last Clink Room contest.

This will make me 3 for 3 in the contests that ive entered over there. No idea when these hats will be available, it definitely isnt a quick process and i know the guys at the Clink Room have a lot of hats back-logged that have yet to be produced. So we'll just have to wait and see.

It's not often I come across a pair of tennis shoes (as in, made for tennis. Not like how my mom calls all athletic shoes "tennis shoes".) that actually look nice. I can easily see wearing these Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour with some shorts in the summer time. If they come out with some different colorways that fit my tastes a little more, id consider picking these up. Hopefully on discount though, im not trying to drop the $130 retail on these.

Good news! Longtime friend of the blog, and personal buddy of mine Boston Chris is back on the streets. My man has had a rough go the last year and a half or so, but thats irrelevant now. All that matters now is that hes back and maybe he can pressure me into getting this damn blog up and running again.

He hit me up last week and got me caught up on his recent trials and tribulations etc, and mentioned that he was getting some of his boys back home to grow out Decembeards, so you already know i was down to join in. Although, admittedly, i have about a month long headstart on him. Boston Chris just doesnt give a shit though (word to the honeybadger), so without further delay, heres pics of week 1. Complete with his own embellishments and "sunglasses indoors swag".

And heres mine currently, with a little over a month of growth already. And i couldnt be outshined on my own blog so i had to throw on my brand new Walgreens beanie. Its literally been freezing in the pacific northwest lately, and you cant beat $1.99!

Im gonna try to post updates every Monday til the month is over. If anyone out there wants in, send me your pics and ill post them up as well.

My man Jamael sent me a little Benny Gold care package the other day (he works/worked there) It consisted of 6 shirts, 2 pairs of socks (which are super warm, i might need more for the winter) and a bunch of stickers/keychains/pins etc.

Ive already put almost all of it to good use, so a huge thank you to my man for that. Just when i was needing some new shirts, he came through with the perfect timing.

My buddy's bar that i do the design work for recently won a few awards. Best Happy Hour, Cocktail Lounge, Lunch, and Dinner in the city. Pretty impressive if you ask me, since they just opened in January.

So i whipped up this little graphic, and made him an etched glass vinyl decal to put on his front window. I kept it simple and clean, as i tend to do. Im gonna take it down to the pub tonight and surprise him.

So a couple of weeks ago i got my hands on some Mariners tickets. Diamond Club tickets to be more specific. Now, ive been to VIP and Box Seats/Suites at every sports venue in Seattle and THIS is easily the best experience. (not counting the time i sat on the pitch for that Sounders game) The great thing about Diamond Club seats is that it combines the amazing seats, with the VIP treatment of a suite, which is usually up high at club level. So you get all the free food and booze you can handle, AND youre 4 rows behind home plate. Seriously, its hard to beat.

We got a plethora of food as soon as we got there. I didnt take pics of it all but we got pretzels, pizza, fish & chips, hot dogs, parmesan garlic fries, and a couple of ice cream sundays. And obviously some beers and whiskeys. (and wine for my distinguished lady)

Besides my fiance, i took along these two goons. My buddy Dallas and my man from SF, Jamael. He got lucky with the timing, as he happened to already be visiting seattle when i got the tickets. I fully expect the favor to be returned in free drinks when i make it down to SF soon. (they also both happen to be a hair away from legally qualifying as midgets. They were standing on a step above me for this pic)

The thanks i get for bringing these goons to the game.

Oh, and the Mariners lost like usual. We, however, did not care.

And heres a little video i took on the way out after the game, to give you an idea of how close we were to the field, but at the same time, how close we were to all the free booze we wanted!

I fished with Danny and Rory for two days and got my limit both days. And they gave me 2 extra fish (since theyd been there all week and had plenty), so i went home with a cool FULL of 6 good sized salmon. 5 Kings and 1 Silver. I didnt take as many pics as last year, but here are the ones i have of a few of the fish.

We also caught a couple of Sea Bass by accident. We kept 2 and threw 1 back.

And i took this pic for Nick, i was fishing out in the ocean....wearing Spiridons. Yup. Only minimal amounts of salmon blood stains were acquired.

Last weekend i took Dallas, my lady, and my pops to the Mariners game, to sit in the Budweiser suite. We didnt take many pics, but here are a few of them anyway.

The food is always on point, so we tend to stuff ourselves retarded.

I find it funny that they have TVs out above our seats, but still protected by the roof. Seems excessive, but awesome nonetheless.

Oh yeah, and the Rangers shut Seattle out. Otherwise, it was a pretty fun evening.

So my beautiful lady and i went to the horse track this Sunday. I was able to get us tickets to the Widmer Club again, which is basically the VIP tables up on the 5th floor of the building. You get free admission and free valet parking. All the food and alcohol is free, as well as a TV at your table and a betting kiosk 10ft away. Plus theres a full wait staff that brings you all your beers etc. Pretty much the best way to enjoy the races.

My first beer of the day, as well as an Ad i designed (for my buddy's pub) that is in the racing program every day.

Even with the awesome table, we always go down to track level for a while. Mostly so she can watch the horses up close, and so i can smoke a cigar. (and enjoy the sunshine, if its out)

So overall i think i came out a few bucks ahead after a full day of betting, and after tipping our waiter the whole day at the track only cost me $20. Cant beat that.

Oh, and this dude was hilarious. He was wearing his sunglasses inside all day long, and he was wearing linen pants when the weather was only in the 70s. But the best part about him is the wet spot on his ass. I couldnt stop laughing every time he came over to use the betting kiosk. This dude either sharted on himself, or has a really sweaty butthole. So last weekend i went to opening day at the race track. My buddy Danny (you may remember him from my fishing posts) has a sister who owns some horses, so we went down to the track early and checked out the stable areas in the back. Pounded a few beers met his family. Took a few pics.

Danny's sister's horse was running in the feature race. So we went down to the paddock area before the race and hung around, tryin to look important.

Believe it or not, this jockey....is a woman. 0_O

This was their horse. They show the horses off like this right before the race. Some people who know what theyre doing can probably pick up on some minute details based on the horse's behavior. Again, i know nothing so i just stood around on the inside of the paddock area, looking like i knew what i was doing.

Right before the race, we headed up to the owner's box to watch, this was the view.

This is me and Danny at the end of the night. We only look happy cause we had a few beers. We ended up losing all our money that night.

Fun night overall. Pretty soon ill be going back and taking my lady with me to partake in the VIP treatment, via the Widmer Brothers Brewing club seats. I might post about that as well.

Thats all for now. (also i learned that betting on horses based on name, as opposed to knowledge is just as effective, according to most experienced gamblers there that night)

My first car...

I found these pics on my hard drive today. This was my very first car. 1989 Honda Accord 4 door, SOLID GOLD. I paid $3,000 cash, that i had saved from my job as a bag boy/stock boy at a grocery store.

One day, after id already moved out from my folks house, i stopped by for some reason or another. I parked in front of their house, and was sitting on the couch watching TV, waiting for them to get off work.

Then i heard a SERIOUS tire squeal, followed by a big impact and some crashing noises. I jump up, and look out the window just in time to see a bright orange early 80s Chevy truck speeding away.

I go outside to find this...

Some old Latin dude had come barreling around the corner and couldnt stop or slow down enough before he plowed into my rear driver's side quarter panel. I guess he decided "F it" and just kept on speeding down the road. I called the police and my parent's neighbor, the nice guy that he was, jumped in his truck, motioned for me to join him, and away we went, looking for the culprit.

Amazingly, we found an orange truck, parked crookedly, in a driveway about 6 blocks away. IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD. So we got out, crept up the driveway to inspect his front passenger side and sure enough, the damage matched. Then one of us stepped on a stick that snapped and made a pretty loud noise ( i know, it sounds like a scene from a movie) and we sprinted back to his truck and took off back to my folks place.

End of the day, the cops came, i told them where he was parked, they talked to him, came back and told me that the drunk mexican (allegedly) had insurance and it was actually the same insurance company that i had.

I had a check for $2900 4 days later. I had owned that car (that i paid $3,000 for), for a few years and it had a transmission that was slipping, among other ailments....and i got $2900 for it.

Best car accident of my life.

Im not a fan of Scions, but this looks pretty decent. Granted, its a concept car at the moment, so odds are the production version will look nothing like it, but still. For now, it looks decent.

I actually kinda like these. Jordan Brand has been throwing air max units on all kinds of crappy hybrids lately, but these are pretty clean. Im not paying the $135 retail on em, but if they hit the outlets, i might grab a pair.

Dropping in May possibly is this clean and simple black/medium grey-white colorway. They feature an all black mesh upper having a strip of leather on the sides also as a patent tip on the toes. A white midsole and grey outsole comprehensive this 1. They’ll be a general release readily available in complete family members sizing from men’s all of the way down to crib soft bottom’s. Sirico has played gangsters in a number of films, including Mob Queen, Gangsters, Love and Money, Fingers, Defiance - 1980, The Last Fight, Goodfellas, Innocent Blood,Bullets Over Broadway, The Pick-up Artist, Mighty Aphrodite, Gotti, Cop Land, and Mickey Blue Eyes. He also played policemen in the films Dead Presidents and Deconstructing Harry.^[1]
Before turning to acting, Sirico was reportedly a fast-rising mob associate of the Colombo crime family serving under Carmine "Junior" Persico and had been arrested twenty-eight times. There is a Sopranos reference to this fact when Paulie says "I lived through the seventies by the skin of my nuts when the Colombos were goin' at it."^[2] In 1967, he was sent to prison for robbing a Brooklyn after-hours club, but was released after serving thirteen months. In 1971, he pled guilty to felony weapons possession and was sentenced to an "indeterminate" prison term of up to four years, of which Sirico ended up serving twenty months. In an interview in Cigar Aficionado magazine, Sirico said that during his imprisonment, he was visited by an acting troupe composed of ex-cons, which inspired him to give acting a try. According to a court transcript, at the time of his sentencing, he also had pending charges for drug possession.^[3] Sirico appeared in a 1989 documentary about life, The Big Bang by James Toback, in which he discussed his earlier life.
He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, who lived with Sirico, died in 2003. Sirico's brother, Robert Sirico, is a Catholic priest and co-founder of the free-market Acton Institute.^[4]

I came across this pic on The Smoking Section and it took me back to junior high. SO many nice Nikes dropped. Had i been older and had a job at the time, im certain i would've been broke for the duration of the year.

Although now that im older, my tastes have changed. So even though nike has re-released almost all of the shoes above, the only ones i own are the AM95s and the Jordan 11s.

IRISH Oliver Fitch...

So yesterday i was bored and decided to remix the mascot logo i designed for my buddy's pub. (The name of this fella is Oliver Fitch. I designed him to be ambiguously European. He ended up looking mostly British, but thats fine, we're all happy with that.)

So i thought id remix him for use on promotional St. Patrick's day material. So i set about making Oliver Irish.

This is the current, original logo.

I printed out a few small versions and set about drawing on him, with different variations of a beard and hair. (sorry for the small pic, click it and it'll get a little bigger)

From there i scanned it and went about vectoring it up. When i showed him, the client chose to go with the middle version. But the more i looked at it, the more i realized he kinda lost his look when you add a beard, so i made the executive decision to just make the mustache bushy and keep it simple.

Then i added a 4 leave clover to his hat and called it a day.

There you have it. Irish Oliver.

It turned out to be a BIG hit with the guys at the pub. We're probably going to do more remix's in the future, for big events. Such as a mexican version for Cinco de Mayo, a Christmas version, maybe halloween, etc. You get the idea.

Jimmy Fallon is getting a little bit funnier, as the years go by...

By now EVERYONE has seen at least some aspect of the Charlie Sheen fiasco. The bottom line is, dude has some issues (and no one is really certain what they are yet, aside from Dr. Drew who says hes clearly "manic").

I dont even care what issues he has though, because whatever those issues are, they are making for some hilarious TV interviews and soundbytes.

I finally stepped into the 2000s a couple of weeks ago. Picked up a 46" Samsung 1080p LED TV. And a Samsung Blu-ray player to go along with it.

Pardon the crappy pic (its about as clear as my old tube tv).

I felt like painting a bear with antlers. No specific reason, i just thought it would look cool and ive always thought about painting a bear. So i figured id add antlers and get to it.
